Inherent In A Name

No one in Judaism would argue against the fact that one’s name is one’s essence. It’s at the core of our Hebraic philosophy.  Therefore, let’s examine the name of this week’s hero, Pinchas. If you split his name into two words it spells pen chas, “maybe he will have pity.” That’s because his essence was to have mercy just like his grandfather, Aharon, who pursued peace with everyone and yet Pinchas rose above his name and initiated action that ultimately brought peace to the Children of Israel.
